February 2004

The Goldfish Report editors have a page on this site to communicate important information about the GFSA's premier print publication. Go take a look here. We hope everyone has enjoyed what has now been a full year publishing top quality content in a full color format!

If you have let your membership lapse or have been thinking about joining the GFSA, now is a great time - here is a form you can print. To submit material for the Goldfish Report to editor Matt Lyon, please see the updated society contact info. Articles and photos in electronic form are particularly appreciated.

We would like to start creating the 2004 events calendar. We would also like to expand this calendar to reflect the tropical fish shows that support a significant goldfish class and, for that matter, any other goldfish-related events. So if you have a show or event please send us an email or use the submission form on the calendar.

The current line-up of people filling the GFSA offices is on the society officers page.

Seasonal Advice

Things you can feed goldfish:

High quality frozen foods, like brine shrimp and bloodworms, are great supplements. You can place small, frozen chunks directly in the tank and the fish will pick at them as they melt. You might want to turn off the filter or only feed small amounts at one time, to avoid the food getting sucked into the filter.

Veggies: most vegetables can be offered to goldfish. Slightly to completely cooked may offer the best results (most food in fish, least mess in tank). Chopped broccoli florets are good, but tend to cloud the water. Spinach and most leaf greens are excellent. Peas are an old standby and often help fish with buoyancy control issues.

Egg is a good protein source for goldfish. Scrambled and microwaved is the common way to prepare this. Feed in small amounts to keep the tank clean.

Cooked rice can be fed and goldfish seem to like it. It is not particularly nutritive, but it has a reputation as helping to give goldfish round deep bodies, which is desirable for some types.
