March "comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb". For the fish keeper this means longer days that vary from reminders of winter to previews of summer. Sometimes within hours. For those of you with shallow outdoor ponds in sunny spots, this can mean big temperature swings. Keep an eye on the fish and consider light feedings if they show signs of activity, with water temperatures venturing into the 50F range.
Covering your outdoor pond (if you don't already do this) with a transparent or translucent material can help slow all forms of heat loss and reduce temperature swings. Make sure that whatever you do, you have a decent thermometer in the pond and monitor the temperature.
